Writing in Room 12
Students in room 12 love to write! As a school we are following the "Being a Writer" program. This program is organized around different genres of writing. We begin the year by setting up our classroom community of writers. Students then learn about persuasive, expository, personal narrative, and fiction writing.
Our writing time usually begins with a whole class lesson on the carpet. New strategies are taught and modeled often through reading children's literature. Students then work with their writing buddies to practice the strategy. We then move into independent writing time. During this time students pick their topic that they are writing about within the genre that we are studying. It is during our independent writing time that I am able to conference individually with students. Our writing block usually ends with time for students to share their work in the author's chair.
